How to balance romance and adventure into a novel?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I recently just finished the 2nd draft of my first novel in a 7 part series and now I’m embarking on the 2nd novel and my question is how do you balance romance and adventure so that there isn’t more then the other. I want it to be evenly balanced.

It’s tough, most authors will tend to lean towards one or the other. When I write I tend to play to my strengths and prioritise adventure and horror while using romance amongst other things to help flesh out the story and the characters to make the reader care.
If you want a balance of each then the most obvious thing to say is try and devote a similar amount of the text to both. I suppose if you divide it up into adventure and romance scenes it is going to feel disjointed so make an effort to blend the two (it’ll read more naturally that way as well).
Without knowing what you are writing I don’t really know what more to tell you. Good luck with your novel.

Can you make a decent living being a full-time author of romance novels?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

So saying that your novels are picked up by a publisher and so you have no trouble getting published–how much of a living can you make from writing romance novels full-time? Thanks!

Only about 5% of authors make a living at it. The rest have regular jobs and write in their spare time. If you go to Harlequin’s site, they have an outline of what they expect in a romance novel. Very helpful. Pax-C

What do you hate and love about romance/fantasy novels?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

I’m writing a novel and it’s fantasy/romance. But I would like to know what you guys hate and love that authors do. Do you like fantasy or romance novels?Romance/fantasy?

i hate how sometimes the fntasy aspect can overshadow the romance
and i hate when in fantasy novels there are like 523424314315424 different characters whose weird names you just cannot keep up with

however, when it is done correctly and there is a perfect balance between fantasy and romance, then fantasy/romance books aremy favorite type of book to read!

What are some good mystery romance or romantic suspense book series?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

I am looking for some authors that write mystery romance or romantic suspense books. Preferably a series of books.

I just started reading the heather wells series by Meg Cabot, and I am really enjoying it. Its got murder, mystery and romance. The first book is called Size 12 is not fat, I know not the best title, but that’s not the premise of the book. I really reccomend it.

What are the names of some authors who write historical romance novels?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

I love historical romance novels especially ones written by Judith McNaught. I’ve pretty much read all her books and I want to find other authors who write like her and in that same period. Thanks for the help in advance :)

Kresley Cole has some good ones. She also has a supernatural kind of series that’s pretty awesome.

Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series is also really good.

Do you find many romance novels to be similar to eachother?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

I’ve read a lot of romance novels with very similar plot lines but by different authors. Have you? I’m definately not saying all romance novels in the least bit, but definately some. Agree? Disagree?

If they are within a particular imprint, that is not surprising. It may be a ‘formula book’, which is one of the major complaints originally about imprints like Harlequin Romance.

Some formula imprints are very specific, others not so much. One may list that the woman be a CEO on a business trip that has an affair with a local worker, while another imprint may only require that all stories take place in a major foriegn city.
