How to balance romance and adventure into a novel?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I recently just finished the 2nd draft of my first novel in a 7 part series and now I’m embarking on the 2nd novel and my question is how do you balance romance and adventure so that there isn’t more then the other. I want it to be evenly balanced.

It’s tough, most authors will tend to lean towards one or the other. When I write I tend to play to my strengths and prioritise adventure and horror while using romance amongst other things to help flesh out the story and the characters to make the reader care.
If you want a balance of each then the most obvious thing to say is try and devote a similar amount of the text to both. I suppose if you divide it up into adventure and romance scenes it is going to feel disjointed so make an effort to blend the two (it’ll read more naturally that way as well).
Without knowing what you are writing I don’t really know what more to tell you. Good luck with your novel.

What is your favorite type of romance novel?

Monday, January 11th, 2010

I am going to be a romance novelist, and I am about 1/3 of the way done with one of my books. I would like to know from readers what their favorite type of plot, or things you like to read, in a romance novel? What are your favorite emotions to feel while reading?

Every romance novelist should read a few of the ‘greats, like Georgette Heyer, even if not a fan of the genre. I would obtain a degree in a field that interests me and maybe minor in English or Literature if I could start over again. You might want to join a forum like All About Romance (AAR). You don’t actually have to join, but you can read tons of reviews about recent and older books. There are a lot of topics on the site and many different perspectives.

Here is one article that asks various writers, "What is a romance Novel:" http://www.likesbooks.com/romance.html

Typical often used plot devices that I am a little tired of:
Boy meets girl, conflict, cohesion, the big misunderstanding, etc. I enjoy historicals as long as they are not complete "wallpaper" historicals. I like dark age, medieval, pirates, highland warrior, victorian, etc. I do not mind vampire, werewolf & shapeshifter as long as it is "romantica," otherwise, it is played out and the market is flooded with it. I am rare in that I *hate* chick lit.

At the time of this writing, my favorite romance writers are Jo Goodman, Helen Kirkman and Jayne Kentz (and all of her pen names). Their characters are strong, fully realized, *believable,* and witty in a dry sort of way; and, of course: sensual when the time is right :) . Further, their heroines are rarely ever TSTL (too stupid to live) and the hero is rarely an outrageous jerk. The more you read about romance, the more you will see acronyms such as TSTL.

In my view, most writers want the reader to feel intrigued. I like the tension and the unyielding curiousity about what is going to happen next. A reader may not like or understand a character or a particular plot device for a while there, but they stay up an extra hour later out of curiousity.

With romance: I like the happily-ever-after (HEA) ending.
With suspence: I like some type of closure since HEA isn’t always practical.

Good luck! Never give up your aspiration to write – it may take awhile, but you WILL succeed :)

What’s with all the demonic romance novels latley?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I am an avid romance reader and I’ve read my fair share. Recently at Hastings almost every single romance novel there has some sort of "monster" genre tied to it. Vampires, werewolves, witches…where does it stop? Why are authors shoving that stuff down societies throat? What happened to the good ol wholesome novels?
Don’t act insulted, I actually enjoy Twilight and the other books in the series.

Paranormal romance is hot stuff in the publishing idustry right now that is why you are finding it everywhere. Lots of people are buying it. An article here discusses this http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,21074436-5003424,00.html

Romance authors in particular, will write what the publishers are asking them for and paying them to write.

There are still "wholesome" romances out there, just check the back of the book to make sure you haven’t picked up a paranormal / supernatural romance imprint.

My suggestion – look for historical romance imprints.
